Art at Sherborne Boys

Encouraging expression, excellence, and imagination.

At the heart of our Art & Design Department is a simple belief: every student has a unique creative voice, and our role is to help them discover it. Art is not only a subject - it is a way of thinking, questioning and engaging with the world. In the Sixth Form, we challenge our students to look closely, think deeply and express themselves with originality and confidence.

Our department is built on exploration. We encourage students to experiment widely, to learn from the work of artists and designers, and to develop a strong command of visual language through hands-on experience. Whether through drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, mixed media or lens-based work, our students gain the skills, discipline and independence needed to produce imaginative and meaningful art.

Above all, we aim to nurture curiosity, ambition and creative courage. For those excited by shaping the visual world and eager to pursue their ideas with purpose, Art & Design offers not only a rich Sixth Form experience but also a pathway to a broad range of creative futures.

Where Creativity Leads the Way

Boys have access to excellent facilities, including well-equipped studios and workshops open during the day and at weekends. Many boys choose to work independently in their free time – developing personal projects, building portfolios, and taking ownership of their creative growth.

Sherborne pupils produce exceptional work across all year groups, with GCSE and A level submissions regularly earning top grades.

Artistic achievement is celebrated in exhibitions, around School, and in the pages of The Shirburnian. Each year, our creative output reflects the individuality and imagination of the boys themselves.

Sixth Form

Art & Design in the Sixth Form offers boys an exciting opportunity to explore their creativity and express their ideas with confidence. Students work in one or more areas of Art & Design, with the freedom to combine disciplines and explore connections across them. Areas include:

  • Drawing and painting
  • Mixed media, including collage and assemblage
  • Sculpture
  • Ceramics
  • Installation
  • Printmaking (relief, intaglio, screen processes and lithography)
  • Moving image and photography
